June 9, 2021 - Roughly 200 invited guests, including state, county, and local officials, gathered on location and at the future site of the Mayflower Morale, Welfare, and Recreation (MWR) Conference Hotel to celebrate the official groundbreaking for the first piece of the Mayflower Mountain Resort. The MWR Conference Hotel hopes to complete construction and open for its first guests in 2023.
The Mayflower development plan was approved by Wasatch County in August 2018. That same year, Wasatch County worked with the State of Utah and its representative Military Installation Development Authority (MIDA) to designate Mayflower jurisdiction to MIDA.
As part of the Extell Mayflower Mountain Resort, OZ Architecture was selected to design the new MWR Facility Hotel and Conference Center for Extell Development and MIDA. The MWR Conference Hotel is the only MIDA facility at a U.S. ski resort, and a key step in creating one of the most innovative public/private mountain resorts in ski industry history. Designed in a “mountain modern” vein, the OZ concept for the conference hotel draws heavily from the mining history of the site and from the surrounding Wasatch landscape, incorporating a mix of materials, including metals and stone, with large expanses of glass to capture the views and natural light. There’s also a wealth of outdoor space, including multiple terraces (with firepits) and lawn space to encourage gathering, and several hot tubs surrounding the outdoor pool.
Once complete, the hotel will offer 60,000 square feet of conference space and 387 guest rooms – 100 of the guest rooms being reserved for military personnel along with 55 private residences. As this is the first new mountain resort to be built in America in the last 40 years, the future economic impact and drive for additional tourism growth will be huge for the surrounding areas.
