The Alpine Loop is 24 miles of paved highway that winds through rugged alpine canyons of the Wasatch Mountain Range, offering spectacular views of Mount Timpanogos (the 9th tallest peak in the state at 11,752 feet or about 3,582 meters) and other glacier-carved peaks. Along this route, visitors can explore natural water features and waterfalls. The road passes near the incredible Timpanogos Caves National Monument where visitors can explore the interior caves. The drive continues past the pristine and world-renowned Sundance Mountain Resort (open year-round) where guests can park and take the approximate 1.75 miles one-way, easy hike to Stewart Falls - a 200-foot tall waterfall (accessible year-round).
This drive is a favorite during autumn when the reds and golds of maple, oak, and aspen contrast sharply with a backdrop of evergreens. Timpanogos Cave National Monument is a worthwhile stop along the route and Cascade Springs makes a great rest stop. The full Alpine Loop is closed during winter months, however the world-renowned Sundance Mountain Resort is accessible year-round from US Hwy 189. Located high on the rocky slopes of American Fork Canyon in the shadow of Mount Timpanogos in Utah's Wasatch Range are three limestone caves: Hansen Cave, Middle Cave, and Timpanogos Cave that make up this national monument and local treasure. These exquisite caverns are decorated with an elaborate display of helictites and anthodites in a variety of colors. Advance tickets are required for entry.
Cascade Springs is a large artesian spring north of the Mt. Timpanogos Wilderness Area and along the Alpine Loop Scenic Backway. Seven million gallons of water a day flow down a series of limestone terraces and pools among lush vegetation. The short half-mile nature trail wraps around the natural springs and streams with bridges, boardwalks, and paved pathways. Crystal clear waters make it easy to spot trout that inhabit the pools.
The pristine Provo Canyon Scenic Byway spurs from the Alpine Loop. Visitors can enjoy a short 1-mile drive down the canyon to the stunning Bridal Veil Falls natural 600-foot waterfall for an additional sightseeing experience.
